Born out of African tradition, MOCKO JUMBIE-which means leader, protector or mock spirit, has been part of the Caribbean culture for mor than 200 years. It was an art form in West Africa and used to warn villagers of approaching spirits. In the CAribbean today, the MOCKO JUMBIE is a colorful and mysterious figure during festivals and carnivals. Artistically, the MOCKO JUMBIE figure has inspired Mr. Leonard to reinterpret and create the figure as a festive, colorful and contemporary work of art. His creative use of fabrics, seeds, beads and other materialsgives each figure an explosion of energy that ignites the spirit.
