Three examples of dance / currency textiles from the Kuba tribe in Zaire.
Natural plant fibers are woven from the fib of the Raphia palm, and then tie dyed and appliqued. These kuba textile were also used as a form of currency to purchase animals or bride price.

Kuba3 - Antique, cut velvet style with applique, cowry shell and tie dye. Size 30"w x approx. 15' long

Size 15" x 17" Kuba people of Zaire. Men tradionally weave the fabric, and then the women add the imaginative geometric patterns. Cut loop pile, forms the majority with flat stitch embroidery between for contrast. Can be decoratively mounted, used for pillows,or table decorations.

Ceremonial dance skirt from the Dida tribe in the Ivory Coast, Africa. Made from raffia plant fiber, the fabrics are dyed and then resist dyed. Black cotton mounting.

Hand spun cotton cloth that is woven in strips and then stitched together, it is embellished with red dyed yarn, and cowry shell. Tradionally worn by warriors before battle. The Naga tribe is from Northern India, and were some of the last head hunter tribes discovered. Rare.
